Front Gate at Makarpura [Vadodara]
Medium: Photographic print
Photograph of the front gate of the Makarpura Palace near Baroda, Gujarat from the Curzon Collection, taken by an unknown photographer during the 1890s. There are two palaces at Makarpura, situated to the south of Baroda. They were built by the Gaekwad Maharajas during the 19th century as country residences and are set in English-style formal gardens. Sayaji Rao III (ruled 1875-1939) enlarged and improved the retreat and built the Lakshmi Vilas Palace between 1883 – 1890, which was designed by Robert Fellowes Chisholm (1840-1915) in an Italian Renaissance hybrid style. This view shows the gateway in the distance, built in the same style as the New Palace in Makarpura, and the main approach to the palaces through the gardens in the foreground.
