General view of the cemetery, [Surat]
Medium: Photographic print
Photograph of a cemetery at Surat in Gujarat from the 'Album of architectural and topographical views, mostly in South Asia' taken by an unknown photographer in the 1920s. Surat was an important Mughal trading port. The English, Dutch, Portuguese and French were permitted to trade here in the seventeenth century. This view shows a number of tombs in the cemetery. They placed close to one another and show a homogenous architectural style which is characterised by its use of domes and arcades. Thanks to the English, Dutch and Armenian communities living in Surat, there are three cemeteries in the town.
