Photograph of the gateway to the Makarpura Palace near Baroda, Gujarat, from the Lee-Warner Collection: 'Baroda views and buildings, c.1890', taken by an unknown photographer. There are two palaces at Makarpura, south of Baroda, built by the Gaekwad Maharajas in the 19th century as country residences. The New Palace was built by Sayaji Rao III (r.1875-1939) between 1883 and 1890 and was designed by Robert Fellowes Chisholm (1840-1915) in an Italian Renaissance style. The entrance gateway to the grounds is built in the same style as the New Palace, with an arcade of semi-circular arches above the central archway and a balustraded parapet crowning the cornice.
