Medium: Photographic print
This photograph was taken by Shepherd and Robertson during the 1860s of the Sikh Golden Temple in Amritsar in the Punjab. The temple is also known as the Hari Mandir and the famous sacred tank is known as the Pool of Nectar. In 1761 Ahmad Shah Durani sacked the city, destroyed the temple and devastated the shrines. The temple was rebuilt in 1764 and in 1802 the roof was covered with gilded copper plates by Ranjit Singh, when the building acquired its popular name.
