View of the riverbank of the Brahmaputra at low tide taken by Oscar Jean Baptiste Mallitte in the 1860s. Various figures are posed in the middle distance, boats are moored at the water's edge and a temple is at the top of the embankment on the right. Guwahati or Gauhati, once known as Pragjyotishpura (the Eastern City of Light), is capital of the state of Assam and is at the centre of the most important tea growing area of India, as well as being the gateway to the whole north-eastern part of the country.
