Photograph of a Hindu temple at Manik Chak in Orissa, taken by William Henry Cornish in c. 1892. 'The List of Ancient Monuments in Bengal' (1896) describes this temple as "abandoned" although "in good condition" and comments that "It has a shrine and ante chamber of a plain style." The temple is situated close to Chilka lake, which, with an area of 1100 square kilometres is Asia's largest inland salt water lagoon. Famous for its bird life such as herons and flamingos, the lake is now a national park. Other animals that live in the vicinity of the lagoon include dolphins, hyenas and deer.
