Medium: Photographic print
This photograph of the large, single-celled Lakshmi Narayan temple, with an unfinished tower was taken by Joseph David Beglar c.1872-73 and forms part of the Archaeological Survey of India Collections. The temple is located close to a village known as Deoghar and Baijnath, in the Sonthal Parganas district of Bihar. The town is home to 22 temples all of which are either dedicated to Mahadeva or his wife Gauri Parbati. According to Beglar, most of the temples were built around 400 years ago and the town has been a major centre of pilgrimage for at least that long. The relics housed within the temples are mainly around four feet in height.
