Photograph of the portico of the great Jain temple, Deogarh taken by Edmund William Smith in the 1880s or 1890s. In the fort area at Deogarh there is a group of Jain temples dating from the 9th and 10th Centuries. Of these, temple 12 is in the best state of preservation. It was built in 862 in the Pratihara style consists of a square sanctuary with a curvilinear tower and a mandapa. The outer walls incorporate niches filled with sculptures depicting Jina figures, Jain yakshis and amorous couples. They are also decorated with horizontal and arched motifs and pierced stone windows.
