General view of valley and camp at Ali Masjid
Photographer: Beglar, Joseph David
Medium: Photographic print
Photograph of the valley and military camp at Ali Masjid in the North West Frontier Province of Pakistan, taken by Joseph David Beglar in 1878 or 79. Ali Masjid was 'the key of the pass' as it was the highest point in the Khyber Pass on the route from Kabul to Kandahar. This is a significant area since Hazrat Ali is believed to have prayed here. The Ali Masjid fortress was blown up during the First Afghan War (1839-42) and at the time this photograph was taken, during the second Afghan War (1878-79), the area remained one of the key strategic points for the British and Indian Armies.
