Photograph of the Faria Bagh, at Ahmadnagar in Maharashtra, taken by Henry Cousens in the 1880s. Ahmadnagar is situated in the modern state of Maharashtra. It was the most important city in the Nizam Shahi state from the 15th century onwards. Founded in 1494 by Nizam Shah it held strong against Portuguese raiders, one of the few states on the western coast to do so. Ahmadnagar is home to a number of mosques, a fort and many other Islamic influenced buildings like the one shown in this photograph. Most obviously, this influence is betrayed by the arched openings that adorn the building.
