Photographer: Cousens, Henry
Medium: Photographic print
Photograph of the Siddheshvara Temple at Haveri, taken by Henry Cousens in the 1880s. Haveri is situated in the Haveri district of the modern state of Karnataka. At
Haveri there are the remains of the monastery of Raghavendra Svami, the old temple of Kalappa and the Siddheshvara temple. This Chalukya temple faces west and is very similar in both plan and decoration to the Mukteshvara Temple in Chaudanpur. The images of the various gods that used to adorn the exterior are badly damaged. In the temple, there are four inscriptions on the pillars three of which are long, around fifty lines and one of which is only eighteen lines. This photograph shows the mandapa on the left and the shrine with shikara or tower on the right. The shikara is ornamented with geometric mouldings.
