Photograph of the south east of the Kalleshvara Temple at Kukkunur, taken by Henry Cousens in the 1880s. Kukkunur is situated in the Dharwar district of the modern state of Karnataka. This temple dates from the 10th century and is built in a Late Chalukya style. The square sanctuary is covered by a triple storeyed tower with a projection in the front and is preceded by a closed porch. The outer walls are decorated with reliefs representing miniature temples. Across the hall, twin, rectangular sub shrines face each other. These are dedicated to Ganesh and to Durga. The temple contains a number of finely worked columns, the capitals of which are lathe turned and and highly detailed.
