Photograph of the Situ Madhavaswami Temple at Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, taken by Alexander Rea in the 1890s, from the Archaeological Survey of India Collections. This shrine is dedicated to Lord Vishnu as Sethu Madhava or Svetha Madhava; the Sanskrit term 'svetha', white, refers to the white stone of which the image is made. This temple stands behind the great Ramalingeshvara Temple of the 17th and 18th centuries.
