Ghaut on the Hooghly [Calcutta] 247151
Photographer: Fiebig, Frederick
Medium: Photographic print
A hand-coloured print of a Ghat on the Hooghly in Calcutta, from the Fiebig Collection: Views of Calcutta and Surrounding Districts, taken by Frederick Fiebig in 1851. The Hooghly is a distributary of the Holy Ganges and is thus considered very sacred and forms an important part of the religious life of Calcutta. People gather for prayers and ritual ablutions at the ghats (landing places) and at the waterfront temples built by rich religious Hindu families.
