Photograph of a group of paliyas (memorial stones) at the Suvan Kansari at Ghumli, in Gujarat, taken by James Burgess in 1874-75. The ancient site of Ghumli has preserved many ruins from the Solanki period, 12th- 13th centuries. Paliyas are memorial stones that are often erected outside the villages to the memory of the deceased. They are flat upright stones which bear an inscription on one side and the figure of the deceased on the other. They are sometimes raised on a platform and covered by a pavilion or chattri.
