Photograph of a group of stupas at the caves of Bhaja, Pune District, taken by Henry Cousens in c.1880, from the Archaeological Survey of India Collections. At Bhaja, south of Karli, there are more than twenty rock-cut Buddhist monasteries from the Satavahana period, excavated in the 2nd century BC. This view shows some of the fourteen rock-cut stupas inscribed with the names of religious teachers that stand outside one of the caves.
