Photograph from the Curzon Collection: 'Vist of His Excellency the Viceroy. Kotah, November, 1902' of ghats on the riverbank at Kota, Rajasthan, taken by P.A. Herzog and P. Higgins in November 1902. Kota is situated on the east bank of the Chambal, Rajasthan’s largest river. The city was protected on three sides by a massive fortified wall, and the river formed a natural barrier on the fourth. This view shows the steps of the Bhutji ghat leading down to the water, with colonnaded arcades built in tiers above the ghat. The hillside is terraced with masonry walls, which are fortified with crenellations at the upper levels, and a bastion at water level on the left.
