Photograph of a Jain temple at Sonagir, taken by George Edward Herne in 1869 for the Archaeological Survey of India. Sonagiri is a sacred place of pilgrimage for the Digambara Jains since the time of Bhagwan Chandraprabhu (the 8th Tirthankara) who attained salvation there. There are over 80 temples on the hill with tall spires which date from around 1300. This temple has an impressive tripartite 'shikhara' or tower. It has a flat roof topped by high parapet with sloping eaves below. There is a monumental entrance in the foreground surmounted by a curved-roof pavilion.
