Photograph of the Lakshminarayana Temple at Orchha, taken by George Edward Herne in 1869. Orchha was founded as the capital of the Rajput state of Buldelkhand in Central India by Rudra Pratap in 1531. The citadel is situated on an island in the Betwa river and has preserved many mediaeval palaces and temples in the Bundela style of architecture, a mixture of Rajasthani, Jain and Mughal influences. The Lakshminarayana temple was built by Bir Singh Deo in 1618. Its interior is richly decorated with ornamental paintings typical of the Bundela school. The frescoes depict scenes from the lives of Rama and Krishna together with colourful images of the royal court.
