Photograph taken in 1888 by an unknown photographer of the the Hydraulic Engine House under construction, swathed in scaffolding at the Calcutta Docks. Its precise location is not determined, but it is probably the building at the western end of the Boat Canal, marked on the maps of this site as 'Main Pumping Station'. Here, hydraulic power was produced to move cranes and to drain the graving docks (dry docks), where ships repairs were carried out.
