Photograph of two wooden houseboats at their moorings, probably at Srinagar, in the modern-day state of Jammu and Kashmir, taken by an unknown photographer in the 1890s. Srinagar has many lakes of which Dal Lake is the largest and considered the most beautiful. It is famous for its intricately decorated and well furnished houseboats and 'shikara' boats which are used for transporting both goods and people and also as floating shops. The boat communities have lived in this way for centuries and sometimes rarely set foot on land. The 'shikara' has been likened to a Kashmiri gondola and this way of life has led to the area being called 'The Venice of the East'.
