This photograph of Howrah Bridge from the 'Walter Hawkins Nightingale (PWD) collection: Album of views of Calcutta, was taken by an unknown photographer in the late 1870s. Howrah Bridge was designed by Sir Bradford Leslie in 1874 and spans over 457 meters and was the only bridge in the 19th century to cross the Hoogly River. In 1943, Hubert Shirley-Smith constructed another Howrah Bridge to replace the pictured bridge.
