Interior, Makarpura Palace, Drawing Room, Baroda
Photograph of the drawing room at Makarpura Palace, near Baroda in Gujarat, from the Lee-Warner Collection: 'Baroda views and buildings, c.1890', taken by an unknown photographer. There are two palaces at Makarpura set in English-style gardens, a few miles south of Baroda. They were built by the Gaekwad Maharajas in the 19th century as country residences. The interior shown is decorated and furnished in a European style with upholstered Victorian furniture and oil paintings. It is likely to belong to the Old Palace, built by Khande Rao (r.1856-1870), as it is similar in design to the durbar hall there recorded in another image from the collection.
