Photograph of Jain temples at Sonagiri, near Datia in Madhya Pradesh, from an album of Miscellaneous views in India, taken by Deen Dayal in c.1882. Sonagiri (literally, the golden peak) is a complex of seventy seven white Jain temples on a hill. Some date from the 17th century. The site is extremely sacred to Digambara Jains and has become a place of pilgrimage. The temple dedicated to Chandranatha, the eighth of the twenty four Jain Trithankaras, is one of the most beautiful.
