Muhammad Ismail Khan came from the Pathan family descended from Nawab Ghafur Khan, who after the battle of Mehidpur recieved Jaora as a grant from the Holkars. Jaora remained a feudatory to Indore. Muhammad Ismail Khan succeeded as a minor in 1865. He was appointed an Honorary major in the British Army.
