Photograph of the River Jhelum at Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, from the Macnabb Collection, taken by Samuel Bourne in 1865. The Jhelum is one of the five tributaries of the Indus, the great river which has its source in the Himalayas and from which India takes its name. Bourne undertook three extensive expeditions to Kashmir and the Himalayas between 1863 and 1866. He took many views of the city of Srinagar and its surroundings during his stay and commented, 'Photography here became one of the most delightful occupations'.
