Albumen print taken by Richard Banner Oakeley of Krishna playing his flute. This figure is part of the profusion of sculpture decorating the Hoysaleswara temple at Halebid in the Hassan district of Karnataka. Here the sculptors of the Hoysala period (1100-1350 AD) made ample use of the chloritic schist of which the rocks in the region are composed. The Hoysaleswara temple dates from the mid-twelfth century. Representing an apogee of Hoysala architecture, it is built in the form of a double shrine with two sanctuaries.
