This photograph of the Kotwali Darwaza or gateway in Gaur was taken by Joseph Beglar in the 1870s for the Archaeological Survey of India. The late fifteenth century gateway is now in ruins and the pointed entrance arch flanked by semicircular bastions has long since fallen. It is situated at the southern entrance to Gaur and marks the border between West Bengal in India and the Rajshahi district of Bangladesh. The gateway was built as part of the urban development of the sultanate capital following its move from nearby Pandua to Gaur in 1446.
