Photograph taken by an unknown photographer in 1888 showing work in progress on the lock linking number two dock and the boat canal to Tolly's Nullah. The Calcutta Port is the only major riverine port in India and it constitutes the Calcutta Dock System. In 1884, the Secretary of State had confirmed Kidderpore as the site for new docks. The Tolly's Nullah, constructed by Colonel Tolly in the 1770s from the dried-up bed of Kidderpore Creek, enabled shipping to reach the delta to the east of Calcutta.
