The Parthasarathi temple was built in the 8th Century by the Pallava Kings; it is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, although the presiding deity, Parthasarathi is a form of Lord Krishna. Later additions to the temple were made by the Chola kings and Vijayanagar kings in the 16th Century. The vimana (tower) over the central shrine is partially covered with gold and is called Ananda Vimana.
