Miscellaneous sculptures and fragments from Kichang, Singhbhum District.
Photographer: Beglar, Joseph David
Medium: Photographic print
This photograph of miscellaneous sculpture fragments was taken by Joseph David Beglar c.1874-76 as part of the Archaeological Survey of India. The fragments all come from Kichang, Singhbum district in the modern state of Jharkhand. The town was occupied for centuries and was surrounded by ruins when Beglar visited. Many sculptures have been recovered both from the ruins of temples and from mounds that are the remnants of ancient occupation. Beglar reported when he found these sculptures that: "Most of the sculpture is broken; some are large life-size, others small, but the execution is excellent, and superior to a good deal of what I have seen elsewhere."
