Photograph from an album of 40 albumen prints by Edmund David Lyon.View looking along the street towards the west gopuram (tower) of the Minakshi Sundareshvara temple in Madurai. The entrance through the gopuram has been bricked up. Lyon's 'Notes to Accompany a Series of Photographs Prepared to Illustrate the Ancient Architecture of Southern India' (Marion & Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of the view which: 'shows the Tower facing the west; the large gateway, both in this and also in the south tower, has been bricked up, and only a small door left for ingress, and even this is very seldom used. The ground within is considerably lower than the street, it is said on account of its great antiquity; the outside rising by accumulations during a series of ages, while the area within retained its original level'.
