Photograph from an album of 40 albumen prints by Edmund David Lyon.This view shows the Porch of the Eight Goddesses, the eastern entrance to the Minakshi Sundareshvara Temple. Lyon's 'Notes to Accompany a Series of Photographs Prepared to Illustrate the Ancient Architecture of Southern India' (Marion & Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description, 'the Tower over the principal entrance to the pagoda. It is situated a little up the road to the left, on leaving the Puthu Portico. The tower here shown, stands exactly in front of the shrine of the goddess. The group over the doorway represents the marriage of Chokalingum (Shiva) and Minakshi'.
