Photograph from an album of 40 albumen prints by Edmund David Lyon. Lyon's 'Notes to Accompany a Series of Photographs Prepared to Illustrate the Ancient Architecture of Southern India' (Marion & Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description: '- is a view of a female figure on the right...... In her right hand she bears the trident, the emblem of Shiva, and above her head rises a five-headed snake with a god seated in its shelter. The portico or colonnade in which these figures are situated, is a very fine one, and is used as an immense bazaar, in which articles of all sorts are exhibited for sale'.
