Print from an album of 40 albumen prints by Edmund David Lyon. View looking north-east across the Golden Lily Tank (Potramaraikulam) of the Minakshi Sundareshvara Temple of Madurai towards the gopurams (towers) beyond. Lyon's 'Notes to Accompany a Series of Photographs Prepared to Illustrate the Ancient Architecture of Southern India' (Marion & Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description, 'is another view of the Golden Lotus Tank. It shows the colonnade which surrounds the tank on two sides, also two of the great pyramidal towers before described. Originally all four sides of the tank were like these shown in this Photograph. The trellis-work filling... looks as if it were quite a modern innovation'.
