Photograph from an album of 40 albumen prints by Edmund David Lyon. Carved figure and painted walls of the arcade running along the side of the Golden Lily Tank (Potramaraikulam) of the Minakshi Sundareshvara temple of Madurai. Lyon's 'Notes to Accompany a Series of Photographs Prepared to Illustrate the Ancient Architecture of Southern India' (Marion & Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description: 'The walls of the Arcade round the Tank are covered with paintings, some of which are seen in this view; also one of the figures into which the columns are carved. These paintings, it may be observed, as well as the colouring of the statues are very much more modern than the architecture of the place; much of it, if not all, was added within the last twenty or forty years'.
