Print from an album of 40 albumen prints by Edmund David Lyon. Carved figure at the Golden Lily Tank (Potramaraikulam) of the Minakshi Sundareshvara Temple in Madurai. Lyon's 'Notes to Accompany a Series of Photographs Prepared to Illustrate the Ancient Architecture of Southern India' (Marion & Co., London, 1870), edited by James Fergusson, gives the following description of this photograph which 'shows also a figure of a Woman cut out of a pillar, and the paintings on the walls of the colonnade round the trellis-work, ... said to have been erected to conceal the women of the king'
