Photograph of a mosque in Medinipur, West Bengal, taken by Walter Campbell in c. 1869. Walter Campbell, of the Bengal Police Department, took seventeen photographs of architecture in the Midnapur District for the Archaeological Survey of India. The mosque sanctuary itself is rectangular in plan and topped by three bulbous domes with lotus finials. The central dome is slightly larger than its side counterparts. There are engaged towers at each of the four corners topped by domed polygonal kiosks. The mosque facade is articulated by a projected central section or 'pishtaq'. This external feature mirrors the position of the central prayer niche within the sanctuary, both of which indicate the direction of Mecca towards where prostration is focused.
