Photograph of mortar mills, probably in the Krishna District of Andhra Pradesh, taken by Ross Thompson Lieut R.E in 1863, from the Archaeological Survey of India. This image is presumably one of the series of views by Thompson of irrigation works in the Krishna District which were shown at the Vienna Exhibition of 1873, although this particular photograph is not listed in the catalogue. The bullock teams are attached to grinding wheels in the foreground with a brick kiln beyond. The mills produced a mixture of sand lime and water needed to make the mortar used in building construction during the nineteenth century; modern mortar is made with cement replacing the lime.
