Photograph of a festival in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, from the Macnabb Collection (Col James Henry Erskine Reid): Album of Indian views. The view shows a large crowd gathered on the steps and in the water of a massive tank at Kanchipuram. This is one of the most ancient towns in Southern India and is regarded as one of the seven sacred cities of the Hindus. From the 7th century to the 9th centuries it was the capital of the Pallava rulers who built numerous temples here. Succeeding dynasties like the Cholas, Pandyas and Vijaynagar further enhanced this small temple town. The town has both Shaivite and Vaishnavite temples.
