In the second volume of his 'Malabar' of 1887, William Logan wrote, "The Varakkal temple...is on an eminence and is dedicated to Bhagavati, Ganapati, Ayyappan and Dakshinamurtti. It is fabled that the image in this temple was placed by Parasu Rama with his own hands. The temple contains sculptures. The dasra festival is celebrated annually with great eclat in this temple. Thousands of people congregate here for the performance on ancestral obsequies on the occasion of new moon in the month of Tulam (October-November)...There is a tank attached to the temple for washing purposes..."
