Photograph of the north entrance gateway to the Fort of Bishnupur, taken by Walter Campbell around 1869. Bishnupur was the capital of the Malla rulers of Bengal, adherents of the Vaishnavite movement that flourished in the area from the fifteenth century onwards. The city contains a group of brick and stone Hindu temples dating from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and representing a distintive architectural style that developed in tandem with these religious affiliations. The fort is surrounded by earthen ramparts and, though now completely ruined, is entered through stone gateways of which this is one example.
