Part of a portfolio of photographs taken in 1858 by Major Robert Christopher Tytler and his wife, Harriet, at Delhi, Lucknow and Cawnpore in the aftermath of the Uprising of 1857. Robert Tytler, whose wife, Harriet had been present throughout the siege of Delhi learnt photography in order to help his wife with a panoramic painting at Delhi. The couple produced over 500 paper negatives in the space of about six months which were shown to the Photographic Society of Bengal. For the remainder of the century the principal sites of the Uprising- the Residency at Lucknow, the well at Cawnpore achieved an iconic status and remained stock items in the portfolio of virtually every commercial photographer which find their place in the albums of almost every visitor to the subcontinent well in to the twentieth century.
