Photograph of the old stone bridge over the Gangi River at Bhitari in Uttar Pradesh, taken by Joseph David Beglar in the 1870s. The remains at Bhitari date back to before the Gupta period however the bridge in this photograph is much more recent. Alexander Cunningham wrote in his report for the Archaeological Survey of India for the years 1862-65 (Vol I), "The Gangi River, which surrounds the village [of Bhitari] on three sides, is crossed by an old stone bridge of early Muhammedan style. The oldest bridge consisted of only two small arches, to which two others have since been added at different times. Bhitari has once been a town of some consequence, and is still a considerable village, with a great number of brick-houses."
