Photograph of Temple17 at Sanchi, from the Archaeological Survey of India Collections, taken by Joseph David Beglar in the1870s. This is an important building from the 5th Century which represents one of the oldest known examples of structural architecture during the Gupta period. The temple consists of a plain square sanctuary with a flat roof preceded by a portico with four columns. These have a tall square base and octagonal shafts and are topped by fluted capitals and brackets carved with seated lions.
