Photograph of the Opening of the Dufferin Zenana Hospital, Gaya, from the Elgin Collection: 'Spring Tours 1894-98', taken in 1895. Crowds are seen gathered in front of the building for the opening of the hospital by the Viceregal party (not visible) in March 1895. Formerly known as the Lady Elgin Zenana Hospital, the building was opened in 1895. It had 82 beds and was meant for local women. The hospital was primarily for gynaecological and obstetric work. It was originally maintained by the Countess of Dufferin Fund and local contributions.
