Old palace at Bhuj
Medium: Photographic print
Photograph of the old palace at Bhuj, Gujarat, taken by an unknown photographer during the late 1870s. Known as the Raniwas Palace, it dates from the 18th century and is part of the palace complex or Darbargarh built by the Raos of Kutch within the walled city of Bhuj. Its fortified windowless walls and jarokha balconies at the upper levels are characteristic of northern Indian palaces. The balconies and roof-top balustrade are ornamented with beautiful finely-carved fretwork screens known as jalis. The palace was badly damaged during an earthquake in 2001.
