Photograph of the old gate of the Uparkot at Junagadh in Gujarat, taken by James Burgess in 1874-75. Junagadh is located in Gujarat close to the sacred Girnar mountain. The old citadel of Junagadh, the Uparkot, was a stronghold of the Maurya and Gupta dynasties until the fifth century A.D. Raised above the town, it came under siege many times. A number of rock cut excavations can be found within the citadel, mainly dating to the 3rd and 4th centuries AD. These were used by both Buddhists and Jains as places of residence. Uparkot can be entered through three gateways with massive walls. This view looks along the street towards the gateway cut through the solid rock.
