Old Palace at Makarpura, Darbar Hall [Vadodara]
Medium: Photographic print
Photograph of the durbar hall in the Old Palace at Makarpura, Gujarat from the Curzon Collection, taken by an unknown photographer during the 1890s. There are two palaces at Makarpura set in English-style gardens south of Baroda. They were built by the Gaekwad Maharajas in the 19th century as country residences. The old palace was built by Khande Rao (ruled 1856-1870). This view of the durbar or royal audience hall shows an interior decorated and furnished in a European style, with Victorian upholstered furniture arranged informally about the room and oil paintings hung on the walls.
