Photograph of three Burmese dancers, taken in Burma (Myanmar) in the 1880s, probably by Philip Adolphe Klier. In this studio portrait, the women are wearing the striped silk wrap-around skirts known as hta-mein, with ornate and flowing waistbands, and close-fitting jackets of fine muslin or cotton known as ein-gyi over bodices. They wear lavish headgear and are adorned with many-stringed necklaces. Such sumptuous dress was usually the prerogative of ladies of the court, and dancers copied the modes set by the court
